Blackjack Switch: Players can switch top cards

Two hands are better than one and that is the main idea behind the newest table game at Thunder Valley Casino Resort in Lincoln.

The game, Blackjack Switch, requires players to play two hands at once, but allows them a chance to switch certain cards between hands. So far, Thunder Valley has one table of the game and one of two Northern California casinos to offer it.

“The table has been full since the first day we put it on the floor,” said Dawn Clayton, the new vice president of casino operations at Thunder Valley. “The bottom line is that Players love it.”

Country wide, statistics support these words. According to data from Shuffle Master, which entered into a distribution deal with the game’s inventor, Geoff Hall, in 2009, Blackjack Switch ranks as one of the most popular table games in recent history, having doubled its worldwide implementation base to 120 from 60 over the past six months.

The game reportedly grew out of players’ frustration over receiving 14s, 15s and 16s, and not having any ability whatsoever to improve the hand. Hall got to thinking: What if players had two hands, and they could switch their top cards to make their hands better?

“I set out to eliminate this frustration for players,” Hall said last week from his home in northern England. “I managed to build into the game an exciting – and strategic at times – component that keeps play interesting and moving quickly, and, at the same time, keeps players engaged.”

Here’s how the game works. Players must buy-in for two hands (so, on a $10 table, you’re really buying in for $20). Once all hands are dealt, players can switch the second cards of their two hands. After a switch, traditional blackjack rules (doubling-down on 10 or 11; splitting any matching cards) apply.

Over time, in order to provide the house (or respective houses) with a slight edge, Hall opted to make Blackjacks pay even money (instead of 6:5 or 3:2 as they pay in traditional games). He also added a major differentiator: When the dealer gets 22 – a bust hand in ordinary blackjack – all player bets push.

Our advice: When you play, stay alert. While Blackjack Switch is a fun game, don’t get so caught up that you ignore who gets paid when. Insiders say the biggest problem with the game is dealer error on 22; because most blackjack dealers are programmed to pay player wagers upon bust, an overwhelming number of dealers pay erroneously on 22 (when all bets technically push).

For us, winning when you should push certainly doesn’t stink. Whether you choose to keep that secret – and any resulting winnings – is up to you.

Blackjack Tables Soon To Offer Progressive Jackpots

Casino resorts have been trying for years to find ways to make blackjack table card games more profitable.

While with perfect blackjack strategy, the casino has only a .5% advantage over the player, with slot machines Casino resorts usually have about a 7% or bigger edge. Casino blackjack also requires time for shuffling, paying out players, switching dealers as well as dealing and collecting the cards.

The new casino strategy would like to see blackjack, the most popular casino table card game in the world, to fall closer in line to video slots, which is the proverbial ‘cash cow’ of every traditional and online casino in the world.

A few companies including Shuffle Master and DEQ Systems have already begun manufacturing devices which would make traditional blackjack more profitable for the casino and more exciting for the player.
The new trend would be to make all blackjack tables within a casino or multiple Casino resorts to become progressive. Shuffle Master already allows progressives on their custom three-card-poker or let-it-ride game tables. Players must bet and extra $1 on special glowing circles on the custom game tables to be eligible for the progressive jackpot.

DEQ has a progressive system where random tables or random seats are selected as “lucky player” or “lucky card” tables where progressive wins are possible. According to experts, partaking in such gimmicks would be considered one of many losing black jack strategies, since the casino’s edge jumps to as high as 17%.

Mr. Corey Plummer, VP of gaming for Rivers Casino, explains – “You’d probably see more technology coming to tables in the form of progressives first. Then where you have, say, three different types of games that have progressives, the next technology would be to link those progressives together.”

Most progressives will work on the concept of ‘bad beat’ jackpot. The progressive would be won if the player’s 20 is beaten by the dealers 21, as long as the dealer uses at least seven or eight cards to make 21.
